Did you know about Ambitious Muslim Overwhelm?

March 2, 2024
Assalamualaikum!

I want to share an email from a reader of the Big Win newsletter.

Over the years, I’ve received a considerable number of emails like this.

In my digital career journey as well, I’ve felt the pressure, the overwhelm. This has led me to discover the case of the Ambitious Muslim Overwhelm.

Before I reveal the symptoms of this multifarious syndrome that I’ve dedicated 6 years of my life to studying, let me tell you that there is a simple cure for this which I’ll be sharing later in another email.

Here are the symptoms of Ambitious Muslim Overwhelm, keep reading if you can relate to one of these bullets:

  • You are an ambitious high-achieving professional who feels behind in their Dunya and Akhirah goals… you feel unfulfilled and want to do more than your career/ job allows you
  • You want more control of your calendar but don’t know how to create your dream balanced lifestyle with a 9-5 Career
  • You want to use the opportunity of internet business to have the power to break free from the shackles of your job. You want to do this so you can earn leveraged income online, have the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world, make a true impact, and live your full creative potential
  • You have a lot of ideas but find it hard to get clarity on your next steps and follow through
  • You are used to being told what to do (by your boss, job) aka, the employee mindset and find it hard to create self-accountability and self-discipline to do the work required for your dream goals
  • You’re confused about what’s really important when everything looks like it’s important and you don’t know what to cut out of your life to reduce overwhelm
  • You’re disappointed for starting things but not staying consistent in them
  • You’re exhausted from being busy all the time but have nothing much to show for it
  • You feel guilty that you’re not making enough time for Deen and family, that you could be doing more
  • You want to stay in a state of Perpetual Optimism, Gratitude & ‘Enoughness’ but struggle to feel satisfied with your efforts and the results of your efforts

Here’s the conundrum for the Overwhelmed Ambitious Muslim

Verily the religion (Islam) is (made) easy and whoever overburdens himself in his (practice of) religion will be overwhelmed by it. Follow the right course, seek closeness to Allah, give glad tidings; and gain strength by worshiping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.”

So then…why do high-achieving Muslims tend to find themselves again and again in a state of overwhelm?

Where they’re working so hard to achieve big things but not feeling satisfied in their efforts…not seeing the success they want…

The truth is…

Real success for high-achieving Muslims is in working on their Deen and Dunya ambitions with a balance.

Surah Al-Qasas (28:77): “But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.”

Think about it – reaching extraordinary Career or Business success is not easy but doable…People do it all the time.

After all, a lot of the successful people in the world have only become successful by achieving big things professionally. At what expense though?

At the expense of their personal life. By being stuck in the hamster wheel of death (career goals). By thinking, living, and breathing their “GOALS”. By compromising their health and burning out fast in the process. And not to forget – sacrificing important relationships for worldly gains.

This ‘hustle’ way of living may work for everyone else… but not for faith-driven ambitious Muslims.

Muslims have the added responsibility of fulfilling their roles in the family, making time for Ibadah, and learning and sharing knowledge about Deen consistently. So add that on top of all your work projects with deadlines and deliverables… and burnouts suddenly seem inevitable.

But to win in Deen and Dunya – taking up MORE goals is not the answer.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Take on only as much as you can do of good deeds, for the best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

More income…

More authority…

More prestige…

More followers…

More work…

More influence…

Of course, we are not belittling hard work. After all, working hard is one of the principles in our Deen.

“Man will not get anything unless he works hard” [Quran, Surah 53: Ayah 39].

But how can you design your best life intentionally that allows you to maintain a state of equilibrium between Dunya and Akhirah ambitions? Not just once. Every day.

All signs have been pointing toward the need for a balanced, Faith-centered, and systematic approach to achieving your Dunya and Akhirah ambitions.

Al-Bukhari (676) narrated that Al-Aswad said: I asked `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) what the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to do in his house. She said: “He would serve his family, then when the time for prayer came, he would go out to the prayer.”

Because no career/ business goal is worth achieving at a loss of faith, health, or family.

I started writing this newsletter and like it happens sometimes, I had to break it into 2 parts.

Tomorrow, in the second part of this newsletter, I’ll share my speculations on 2 important problems why overwhelm happens to Muslims who have big ambitions for both Dunya and Akhirah.

I’ll also share what you can do practically to escape the Overwhelming Capitalist trap. forever.
