Design your dream life in Ramadan

March 16, 2024

Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, give the obligatory charity, perform the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, and fast the month of Ramadan. Look at the way you would love people to treat you and do so to them, and whatever you would hate for them to do to you, spare them of it. I pray your Ramadan is going spiritually reviving so far.

Quick note before we begin – I’ll be writing a newsletter issue each week during Ramadan, except for the last Ashra, during which I’ll be taking a break until Eid.

This week’s newsletter is a special Ramadan Edition, where I’m diving deep into my framework for resetting your life in Ramadan and designing a high performing Ramadan Routine.

This is extremely important for the pursuit of the Big Win (winning big in Dunya and Akhirah)…

What better time to test our potential than in Ramadan?

But if you’re anything like me, you may find yourself in a dilemma most big dreamers and planners find themselves in.

Overthinking about the future.

Worrying about what you’ll be able to accomplish by tomorrow, by next month, by next quarter, by the end of this year. In 3 years. In 5 years. In 10 years…so much worrying.

While it’s important to dream BIG, plan, and strategize, most dreamers find themselves paralyzed in the field of execution because of the weight of their dreams and plans.

The opposite of that is where our beloved doers thrive – they keep executing without slowing down to strategize

Human laws dictate two great phases lie between dreams and reality:

Planning encompasses everything from the great purpose of your life, your Big Dream Vision, to your plan for this year, this month, this week, and today.

Designing your ideal life BEGINS with gaining clarity on your purpose, and your Big Dream Vision (something huge you will strive to achieve that will help you succeed in Dunya and Akhirah).

Some helpful prompts to discover your Big Dream Vision are:

  • What are you designed to do? What are your natural tendencies? These are the activities you’re naturally wired to do by natural gifts given to you by Allah SWT.
  • What are the activities that you love and enjoy doing? What are the activities you don’t mind doing and will enjoy doing more as you get better at them?
  • What do you want to do with your potential? What is the impact on your life and the lives of others you want to create with your potential?
  • Who do you hope to become one day? This is your Faith-Empowered Muslim identity (your excellent self that is a combination of all the roles you want to play in this life)
  • What does your dream day look like? Visualize what you’re doing on that day from start to end. Notice how that makes you feel. Don’t hold back, you’re dreaming…don’t limit yourself. Dream BIG.

Once you’ve painted the gradient of your big dream vision, there’s still a huge gap left to fill between dreams and reality.

That can be filled by asking the question…what can you do about it right now? What is your next step?

You can make that assessment based on the following:

  • Opportunities/ goals that are in front of you (pick the goals that allow you to play the long game (5-10 years long at least) rather than short quick wins)
  • Resources of time, money, and manpower/ support, that are at your disposal (they’re not always in front of you and you have to look hard to find them)

The key is to pick the best opportunity/goal that will propel you forward in the direction of your Big Dream Vision. And then to get resourceful by finding resources to execute on that opportunity/goal.

Nobody knows all the answers to everything. No matter how sure they sound.

Even the Prophet SAW would get overwhelmed and need direct guidance from Allah Almighty. Albeit, his SAW threshold for overwhelm was incredulously higher compared to ours. (recall when Prophet SAW suffered in Taif)

But you can use the 4 tools at your disposal to make a sound decision, regardless of your lack of knowledge of the future…

Once you’ve painted a compelling visual of your dream life and your dream day…

…you must then take a candid look at how you’re spending your time currently.

Connecting the dots between your dream future and what you’re doing in the present is the ONLY thing that will move you a step closer to your dream life.

Ask yourself- Are your current efforts moving you closer to your ideal future?

If not, no worries. It can be fixed.

Reverse engineer your Faith-Empowered Muslim identity. Where are you currently lacking?

This can be the perfect way to figure out your next priorities: look for the current weakest areas of your life.

Note out of the following which areas of your life are weakest…

  • Study of Quran,
  • Fard Ibadah,
  • Mental health,
  • Physical health,
  • Career/business, and
  • Relationships.

List the goals, habits, and skills you need to develop to get closer to achieving your Big Dream Vision. Your list can be as long as it needs to be.

But from the long list of all the goals, habits, and skills you wish to develop, you must shortlist and prioritize the INITIAL goals, habits, and skills you need to develop first

Out of all the goals on your list, further shortlist and select 3-5 that will strengthen the weakest areas of your life.

You will only focus on those 3-5 areas over the next 90 days. (the lesser the better as that increases the likelihood of achieving them)

For each of those 3-5 goals, make a sub-list of all the tasks/ steps you need to implement to complete them or make them a part of your routine.

Start mapping out those tasks over the next 30-90 days.

BTW, if you feel like you didn’t get a chance to get into a productive Ramadan routine so far, it’s alright. It’s not too late to design your high-performing Ramadan Routine. Ramadan is patient with you. 🙂

I teach you how to develop a personalized high-performing routine for Ramadan and beyond Ramadan inside Balance Deen and Dunya.

After you’ve done all the planning.

After you’ve mapped out your goals.

After you’ve designed your ideal routine and week.

Get this – just going the first phase, PLANNING, right will make you more focused and disciplined than literally everyone around you.

90% of the people learn about planning but will never do this. It can be a bit uncomfortable to dig deeper, contemplate and dream big.

That’s why people don’t stay focused on their Big Dream vision.

They start and look for quick wins. Then give up.

Some stay in the pursuit of winning Big in Dunya and Akhirah for longer and finally give up when they can’t see enough “material” success in Dunya.

That’s the capitalist trap. (hint: the key to not falling into the capitalist trap is to set a really low bar for “enoughness” and appreciate everything above that as a bonus from Allah SWT)

This is the only way to stay focused on your Big Dreams for decades

Real success is never giving up.

Look, your Big Dream vision will evolve over the coming years. And that’s okay.

People give up as soon as they get confused about their next step.

To stay in the long game of building your ideal life, you need to be flexible on HOW you will strive on the path, but stay focused on WHAT you’re striving for (winning in Dunya and Akhirah).

Here’s a brief overview of what you need to do to execute your ambitions with focus:

Step 1: Track Energy

Step 2: Track Time

Step 3: Note all the activities you’re currently doing

Follow this process of elimination that will result in clarity around your top priority activities (that need to be done now):

  • Delete the ones that don’t align with your top 3-5 priorities.
  • Delegate the ones you don’t enjoy doing as well as those that don’t align with your strengths. Delegate everything that doesn’t match the high-leverage skills you need to build.
  • Defer the ones that don’t align with your top 3-5 priorities and are not urgent/important enough to be done now.
  • That will leave you with the ones you need to DO now.

Step 5:  Match the activities you need to do now with your energy levels

Once you’ve done that…

The key is to take it day by day.

Especially during Ramadan.

Taking things Day by Day

When you’re taking things day by day, you have to operate from a modus operandi.

What is your modus operandi?

What are your principles for making the most of each day?

For example:

  • I will not give up on reading the Quran, no matter what.
  • I will not waste the rest of the day if something doesn’t go my way.
  • I will start the day mentally prepared for unforeseen problems and take them as growth opportunities.

When overwhelm starts to creep up, focus on your modus operandi (of course, this is to be derived from the principles of success in our Deen.)

Sometimes, making the most of your day means just hanging in there and surviving the day.

I pray you have a memorable and spiritually energizing Ramadan.

ALL my best,
